Top Twending Topics

Friday, January 8th, 2010

A new improv show concept I came up with is staging tonight at 9pm in the Andy Dick Experimental Black Box Theatre at iO West. The conceit behind Top Twending Topics is that our “audience suggestions” come from literally worldwide zeitgeist: whatever Twitter’s Top 5 Trending Topics are at the moment we take the stage.

A massive, alternating cast of iO talent from a bunch of different teams bring what the world is talking about to life, including EXTRA-STRENGTH’s Tommy Bechtold, Brian O’Connell and me, Joy Allen, Drew Coolidge, Sean Cowhig, Jill Czarnowski, Graham Douglas, Matt Keene, Rachel Kimsey, Chris Marrs, Chad Reinhart, Tammie Smalls, Rebecca Stevens, Brandee Stilwell, Julia Wackenheim and James Warfield. “Alternating cast” meaning any combination of these folks do the show, but you’ll rarely see the exact same group any given night.

It’s a super fun show and you should check it out if you can! We’ll be doing one show a month in the Dick Box and then moving to the Main Stage later this year.

See your fav Extra-Strengthers this weekend

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Several of us are in other shows this weekend at the iO West Theatre in Hollywood.

Tonight features the reunion show of the Happy Time Rainbow Bunny Squad (featuring Brian O’Connell) at 9 in the Andy Dick Black Box, and Bobby Hot Stuff’s one-hour Christmas Special (featuring Travis Guba) is also at 9 up in The Loft. Good luck being in two places at once. O’Connell takes to the Main Stage at 11 with the legendary Tigerpants.

We’d also like to give a special shout-out to the Friday 40 End of Year Extravaganza tonight at 10 on the Main Stage, featuring our very dear friends Scott Gimple, Dave Holmes (who John Conroy completed a most excellent project with this afternoon), Jill Alexander (whose 20 Questions/Performer Profile will be featured on this very blog this weekend!), Nick Armstrong & Julia Wackenheim.

Saturday night you can see Conroy & Brian Konowal with Rohan Will Answer on the Main Stage at 10, followed by Justin Uretz in Kick Drum Decade and Travis, Johnnie Hertlein & Brandon Pico in Mr. Falcon at 11. Maggy Keegan stars in Pretty Bird at 9 and the Dollhouse at 10 in The Loft.

We’re all over the place!

Laugh Away the Effects of Tryptophan This Week

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

If you’re in Los Angeles for the holiday and looking for a break from over-eating, there’s a plethora of comedy shows at the iO West Theatre to check out your favorite Extra-Strengthers.

EXTRA-STRENGTH is doing a special holiday show at 9pm on Friday night on the Main Stage.

You can catch Conroy & Konowal Tuesday night when ROHAN WILL ANSWER takes to the Main Stage at 8pm with The Jerks.

Friday night at 8pm (right before Extra-Strength) features the debut of TOP TWENDING TOPICS in the Andy Dick Black Box Theatre at iO West. John Conroy & Brian O’Connell are part of a massive, rotating cast of iO superstars who will perform a show inspired by audience suggestions pulled from worldwide zeitgeist – whatever Twitter’s Top 5 Trending Topics are the moment they take the stage. This is a brand new, one of a kind show.

On Saturday you can catch DR. GOD (featuring Brian O’Connell) at 10pm on the Main Stage, immediately followed at 11pm by MR. FALCON (featuring Travis Guba, Johnnie Hertlein & Brandon Pico). At 9pm in the Andy Dick Black Box you can catch DAYS OF PASSION, which is an improvised soap opera that co-stars Maggy Keegan.

On behalf of Extra-Strength I wish you and your families and friends a fun, hearty and safe holiday!

Rohan Will Answer with Take That Germany

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

You can see EXTRA-STRENGTH’s John Conroy & Brian Konowal play with their ancient (by improv standards) and storied team Rohan Will Answer tomorrow night at 8:30 at the Next Stage Theatre at 1523 N. La Brea (between Sunset & Hawthorn). Rohan will be performing with their frequent dance partners Take That Germany, which is a very, very fun show if you haven’t yet had the pleasure. Those guys are gems and their esthetic balances well with Rohan’s brand of fantasy-based improv.

There will be beer. There will be laughs. There will be no air conditioning, so we recommend layers.Rohan jade plate logo

Rare Bird Show Plug

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Hey folks, Alexis here again. Like so many improvisers in the game, I am a whore. An improv whore, that is! Though an improv whore is different from a regular whore, in that 1) we don’t have sex for money and  2) actually we don’t get paid at all.

One of the groups I tart around with regularly with is Philadelphia-based longform troupe Rare Bird Show.  You might think it’s crazy for me to promote a Philadelphia-based troupe on a blog for a Los-Angeles-based comedy show. Well, you might be right! But you might also be an asshole. Because here on the internet, geographical location matters not.

Here is the part where i put in a link to our online video. Here it is! Hooray!

Monday, October 5th, 2009

You can check out a power hour on Tuesday October 6th at 8pm as Extra-Strength’s Brian O’Connell struts his stuff with Those Who Oppose Us Will Stand Knee Deep in the Blood of Their Children, immediately followed by John Conroy & Brian Konowal playing with Rohan Will Answer on the iO West Main Stage.
